What is Huntington National Bank History?
P. W. Huntington started P. W. Huntington & Company in 1866, which operated on the northwest corner of High and Broad Streets; the location is now the regional headquarters for rival U.S. Bancorp. In 1878, Huntington established its first five-story building on the intersection’s southwest location.
Four of P. W.’s five sons became partners in the 1890s and early 1900s. It was founded in 1905 as The Huntington National Bank of Columbus. Huntington died in 1918, shortly after handing over the bank to his sons.
Francis Huntington was president and served as an active leader for 14 years. In 1915, the bank was granted limited trust powers. In 1922, the Federal Reserve System granted the bank full trust powers. Huntington increased its capital base by purchasing Columbus-based State Savings Bank & Trust Company and Hayden-Clinton National Bank of Columbus in 1923.
Huntington announced in January 2016 that it would buy Akron-based First Merit Corporation for $3.4 billion, rebranding the First Merit Tower in Akron, Ohio, and making it one of Ohio’s top banks.
Due to Sherman Antitrust Act concerns raised by the US Department of Justice, it sold 11 Canton and two Ashtabula branches to First Commonwealth Bank. In addition, 107 Huntington/First Merit branches within 2.5 miles of each other were shuttered.
In June 2022, Huntington finished the acquisition of Capstone Partners, a Boston-based financial services and advisory company.
