History of PEFCU (Publix Employees Federal Credit Union)
The Publix Employees Federal Credit Union (PEFCU) is an owned-by-members cooperative established to fulfill the financial requirements of Publix Super Markets Inc. associates and their families.
The Publix Employees Federal Credit Union (PEFCU) was not made of bricks and mortar. PEFCU was created by people, for people, and with people. Our success is due to the people who share our faith, passion, and ideals. Membership is critical to the design of our non-profit cooperative, and members are what keep the Credit Union going.
Publix founder George Jenkins, John Turner, and other officials of Publix Super Markets, Inc. envisioned PEFCU. Mr. George was known for his compassion, and he frequently assisted Publix employees in financial need.
Someone recommended to Mr. George in 1957 that he establish a credit union in order to serve all employees on a larger scale. He and the other founders decided that Publix’s hardworking associates deserved better loan and savings options, and the credit union’s “people helping people” approach fit nicely with Publix’s culture of supporting one another. They applied for a credit union charter, and the scheme got underway.
The Foundation
The PEFCU founding members gathered in one residence the night the charter was issued to begin the framework. They each canceled money from their wallets and combined it. The hard-earned money that had belonged to each individual household was piled up, not to be claimed individually, but to be owned by all.
That was not meant to be a meaningful event. It was a personal pledge to assist all existing and potential members in living their best financial lives. PEFCU’s decisions now are guided by the spirit of that time.
As members, you control Publix Employees Federal Credit Union and make the majority of the decisions. PEFCU began in a member’s house, and we continue to consider your home when providing membership advantages to you.
